Let me begin by
saying that I'm not a huge fan of the horror genre. After the initial spooky
set-ups and a few jump-scares, I start losing interest as these movies progress
and start offering explanations for the events. In the genre's defense, I have
seen only few horror movies. So, maybe there are some great horror movies out
there. For me the genre is like using Google+ : I happen to open it very
occasionally but I am not impressed by what I see.
So, 'The Conjuring'
is about Ed and Lorraine Warren who are paranormal investigators and one of
their cases that they worked on. A family moves into a neglected and spooky
farmhouse and strange occurrences start happening. As the intensity of each occurrence
increases, the family contacts the Warrens who come down to investigate the
events and now you have your horror movie. Also, keep in mind that the story is
'Based on true events' or 'Inspired by actual events' or '(Insert clichéd
horror movie opening statement indicating that the events actually happened)'.
I can't remember which statement it was.
The story is solid
and good. The dog and birds dying, the clocks all stopping at a fixed time and
the usual creaky doors make for good start and add to the buildup of the
hauntings to come. The Warren's use of scientific equipment to capture the
events, adds some sense to the events. The movie has many surprises and
jump-scares that are achieved only by great camera work and not CGI or any
digital effects. It is good film through and through, though I felt the
exorcism in the ending was a bit underwhelming and the movie ends abruptly.
The movie is
restrained as it avoids too many elaborate action sequences and there is no
excessive or gratuitous bloodshed or violence. It is also genuinely funny in
some parts and overall acting was good, even from the child actors.
You will enjoy the movie if you are horror fan and truly believe.
