Movie Review : This Is The End

The fact that you are reading this is proof that the world did not end on 21 December 2012. No annihilating planetary alignments, compass-reversing polar shifts, unending blackouts, deadly meteor strikes, blinding solar storms, autocratic alien invasion or any other cataclysmic events. The internet spurred the hype for the end of the world and Hollywood cashed-in on it by churning out apocalyptic-themed movies. This Is The End is one such movie.

What makes the movie different is the use of a traditional method to bring about the end. The method is so traditional that it makes the story unconventional. Very few movies could use the biblical Judgment Day as their premise and mix it with humor to produce something that is funny as hell (pun intended).
This movie is about a group of actors who are friends and play exaggerated versions of themselves. They are at James Francos house when all hell breaks loose, literally. Blue lights from heaven, hell fires and a few sinkholes later, they are stuck in the house and have to deal with each other and a dwindling supply of rations until they are rescued. From this point onwards, the movie plays out as a series of set pieces wherein the characters have to deal with some situation that could be dealt with a scintilla of clear thought and sensibility. But such clarity eludes our protagonists who bicker and fight over petty issues (Who would get the 'Milky way'?). Each character deals with situations in their unique way leading to hilarious consequences.
The movie is filled with self deprecating humor and it assumes that the audience has some familiarity with the actors and their careers. The humor is crude and unapologetic and would most likely catch you off guard. The movie also tries to attempt some form of social satire by lightly mocking the modern day celebrity culture, but moves away from it in favor of more mirthful situations.

The dialogues and the execution are great and will surely leave you in fits of laughter. The movie has a nice and simple message about friendship and that it is never too late to redeem oneself. From my personal experience, the best way to watch it is with a group of friends.

To say that 'This Is The End' is a laughter riot is an understatement.
